Nature provides us with amazing medicines if we know where to look. I have a tip on the health benefits of consuming dandelion roots. Dandelions are commonly thought of as weeds, yet their roots are a rich source of inulin, making them a valuable medicinal plant. Inulin is a natural prebiotic fiber which triggers the production of bile and aids liver and kidney function, while also helping digestion and reducing bloating. Inulin can function as a mild laxative, helping with constipation and the elimination of metabolic waste. As a result, consuming it may help alleviate arthritis, rheumatism, and gout. The roots of two-year-old dandelion plants are typically dug in the fall since that is when they contain a higher level of inulin. Fresh roots can be turned into a tea decoction. Dried roots are best used for tea with a dosage of 3-8 grams, taken three times daily. These roots can also be roasted as a coffee substitute. To prepare dandelion “coffee”, add about 3-4 grams (1 teaspoon) of roasted dandelion root to a small saucepan along with 240 milliliters (1 cup) of nut milk. Let it simmer for 15 minutes, strain the mixture and blend for a minute or two until it’s foamy. Then pour it into a cup ready to be enjoyed.
